Challenges in Creating Responsible and Human-Centered AI

Saleema Amershi
Hybrid

The tech industry is facing tremendous societal and increasing legal pressure to ensure our AI technologies are responsibly developed and deployed. Yet many organizations that create AI technologies report being unprepared to address AI risks and failures.

In this talk, Saleema will describe major challenges the tech industry is facing in operationalizing forthcoming responsible AI regulations. These challenges include the cultural shifts needed to move the industry beyond its deep-rooted focus on model accuracy to thinking about AI systems holistically and in context, and the tooling advances needed to streamline AI development, facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration, and encourage rigorous testing. She will then argue for why a human-centered approach is needed to meet these challenges and highlight opportunities to advance the state-of-the-art in responsible and human-centered AI.
