2020 CREATE Showcase
COVID-19 Upate: The Showcase will be held online this year.
Every spring DFP hosts a Design Showcase for our CREATE Grad Training program. This exciting event allows us to show off the projects that our grad students have been working on; our current cohort is partnered with Microsoft Research, LlamaZoo, Ocean Canada, and BC Centre for Disease Control. We also invite students from across campus and beyond UBC to participate with their own design-related demos and posters! View the full schedule below.
Become a Presenter:
We welcome submissions from graduate students (PhD, Masters, Postdoc) who are working on design-focused research. You don’t need to be a UBC student; we welcome submissions from students from various institutions such as SFU and BCIT. We realize that having our Design Showcase online makes a big difference in how you can present your work. Instead of restricting you to a specific format, we are encouraging you to be creative. Use whatever format makes sense to you! Just make sure that it is accessible to viewers – they shouldn’t have to create an account or pay a subscription in order to view it.
We accept three types of submissions (Deadline is Midnight May 14):
Poster: You can choose how you want your poster to be viewed. Here are a few options: Send us a high resolution image (PNG) of your poster and we’ll put it on our website Host your poster on a different platform (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox, personal website, etc.) and use whatever application you want to create it (PowerPoint, Google Docs, etc.). If you choose this option, make sure that the platform you use is accessible without requiring the viewer to create a login/password. We will require a link to your poster so that we can post it on our website.
Demonstration or Video: You may host your demo or video on whatever platform you like (e.g., google docs, YouTube, personal website, etc). The platform must be accessible without requiring the visitor to create a login/password. We will require a link to your demo so that we can post it on our website.
554K Project Student Video: All 554K students (cohort 3) are invited to submit their Project videos

What to Expect:
Your submission will be listed on our website, and will have its own page. The page will include your submission’s title, author(s) name and affiliation, abstract, and either the submission itself or a link to it. On Tuesday May 19th, Showcase attendees will visit the website to view and comment on your submission. This will happen asynchronously – you do not need to be present. On Wednesday May 20th, you will login to zoom (link will be emailed to you) at 11:30am and be assigned your own breakout room. After the Showcase introduction, you will be expected to be present in your assigned breakout room to answer attendee’s questions. If you are giving a demonstration, this will be the time to do it. Just like during an in-person conference, attendees will come up to your presentation on their own, chat with you for a bit, then go off to another presentation. Expect to give a brief overview of your submission to several different groups over the course of the Showcase on Wednesday. People might stay to listen to you for about 5 minutes, then they will move on to view the next student’s project.
As in past years, there will be several cash prizes awarded to top Posters and Demos. This year the award criteria will be focused on creativity and risk-taking as you strive to meet the challenge of presenting your work effectively online.
