I will discuss different entry points to visualization in terms of a nested model of visualization design that suggests evaluation approaches from different intellectual traditions at each of its four levels. I will frame the work that I and my students have done recently through this lens, including systems for visual document mining for investigative journalists (Overview), for interactive authoring of unstructured data (TimeLineCurator), and  methods for fruitful collaboration between visualization researchers and domain experts (Design Study Methodology). I also suggest next steps for engaging further with visualization, including the MakeoverMonday, Dear Data, and Data Sketches projects.
