Abstract:

In this talk, we will take a closer look at the many ways of using design and sketching techniques in human-computer interaction research. I will share a few of the lessons I learned over the past 20 years about the value and unique characteristics of sketching and how we can integrate sketching into all phases of the research process. I will take you behind the scenes of some of the research projects I was involved in, and I will show you how sketching helped us to explore, express, and advance our ideas. This will include techniques for quickly exploring design spaces, taking sketching shortcuts, maximizing expressiveness, and expanding our sketching vocabulary. I will end with a short reflection on the importance of sketching in our rapidly evolving field and how to adopt sketching as an everyday practice.
